Dr Cara Sammons-Shepard, DVM was born and raised in Central Maine.  Growing up, she spent the weekends with her thoroughbred, Petey, at shows throughout New England, competing in showjumping and eventing.  Dr Shepard attended Massachusetts College of Art and majored in Glass after high school, then returned to Maine and taught Art in schools in southern Maine for several years.  While teaching, she and her husband, Devin Shepard, started Flying Goat Farm, and found that veterinary care for small ruminants was difficult to come by.  This realization, coupled with caring for the goats, especially during breeding and kidding , gave Dr Shepard the inspiration to change career paths, and she graduated from Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in 2016.

Dr Shepard has special interests in pain managment and integrative medicine.  She was trained in veterinary acupuncture for large and small animal species at the Chi Institute for Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine.
